Capcom Shows Off RE5, Dark Void, Dead Rising For The Wii And More At CES
Not wanting to get lost among the TVs and gadgets on the show floor packed a suite at Planet Hollywood with demos for several of their upcoming games. While we've covered it plenty, I couldn't resist the coop stations setup for
Resident Evil 5. The new level we played had Chris and Sheva on a small motorboat racing down an industrial looking canal. Infected lined the docks and catwalks laying a heavy concentration of fire on us, and we pretty naturally fell into one of us covering the left side and the other the right. The environment definitely helped play up the intensity with ample things scattered around to burn and blow up and in general it felt like there were always bits and pieces of stuff flying around. Stops along the way showed the basic sort of coop play you expect though the game where Chris would have to pull a lever on one side of a lock while Sheva did the opposite side in order to open it and progress. Not revolutionary, but exactly what it takes to create those fun moments where you're separated from your partner, but close enough to see them, and with a well-placed shot can provide support for each other as well.
On the other side of the room producer Morgan Gray showed a shiny new demo of
Dark Void. While we'd seen the flight, vertical, and ground combat elements of the game individually, this time all the pieces came together to give a real sense for what the dynamic of playing the game will be like. Gray flew main character Will in to assault a futuristic tower hovering in the sky above a valley, jumped around using the jetpack in a hectic firefight to reach the core, and then started leapfrogging up the central column of the structure in the game's trademark vertical combat. Besides putting on a good show, the easy flow holds a lot of promise for Dark Void. Instead of trying to come up with the random special level every so often to keep the game from getting monotonous, mixing things up could be a fundamental part of the game. Watching definitely made me anxious to get a chance to play some and with luck that will come sooner than later.
After Dark Void I moved over to try out the almost-finished version of the upcoming downloadable game Flock. In it you play an alien in a flying saucer herding cows, pigs, and sheep to your mothership to be abducted. When I saw it the first time at E3 the game looked cute and the combination of environmental obstacles and the way the critters popped around when they moved made it fun enough that I thought with the right quantity and quality of levels it could be ok. With the addition of shared user-created levels they should have that part under control now. I played around with the level editor and found it easy to use. The game is built on a tile system which makes it easy to lay down some ground to start with, and then you drop all the furnishings like rocks, plants, walls, and fences. It's not going to rival LittleBIGPlanet, but it looks like a smart addition to the game.
